| | | | FOLK MUSIC | Home » » Live at the Ryman | | | | | | | Description: | | Live at the Ryman is the companion piece to the fourth live album from Texas songwriter Robert Earl Keen, and there is just no arguing that the man is a terrific performer who knows how to work a crowd. Live at the Ryman captures him on a better than average night. There are no real surprises in the set list, which seems to be the way his audience wants it -- the crowd on this disc is loud and wildly enthusiastic, frequently singing along with Keen and chanting his name between songs, and Keen and his band serve up the hits just the way the fans want 'em. Keen seems pretty jazzed by the crowd's enthusiasm, and he and his band deliver these 14 songs with a large portion of energy. | | | Features: | |

WOW & WOW AGAIN!Feb 18, 2010

This is the 2nd concert of Robert Earl Keen that we purchased. We think it's a great showcase for this amazing singer/writer/performer. In addition, his band is quite simply kick-ass. (Can I say that? Kick Ass? Oh, well. Sue me.) This concert is full of Robert Earl's favorites & some new songs (for us, @least). This is one you'll play over & over ... their performance perks everyone up. I'd love to catch one of his concerts "Live" someday. But this is the next best thing.

Not at his best in this oneJan 06, 2008

"Drummer Extraordinaire and Bon Vivant"
I've been a Robert Earl Keen fan for about ten years now, and I was excited when this DVD came out. The Ryman is the country music equivalent to the Fillmore or the Hammersmith Apollo. One would think that for such a legendary venue, Mr. Keen and his band and crew would create a better spectacle. I have no background knowledge of the circumstances surrounding the filming of this DVD, but the performances fall flat. Robert Earl Keen is a dynamic performer and he's got arguably the best band in Texas, but this DVD feels like it is missing something, and that something is the usually-present spark in Mr. Keen's eye. I have to assume something plagued the production of this disc, because the staging was ordinary, the lighting was surprisingly amateurish (each band member has a kind of floodlight beaming in his face from below) and the graphic design of the package is very disappointing. But even when he's just going through the motions, he still delivers an above-average show. I criticize him relative to his own high standards, and I (and I suspect most REK fans) would rather watch a fair-to-middlin' REK performance than anything from the Top 40 country charts any day. A standout from this one is REK's version of "Long Chain." Although it's mislabeled on the case (A huge no-no! This is a commercial product! How'd that slip by?) it's a powerful song, and I believe the first recording of it Mr. Keen has done. Another standout is REK's criminally underrated guitarist, Rich Brotherton. My jaw drops at some of the stuff he does and seeing him perform, he makes it look easy. There are better REK DVDs, but this one is not without its merits. Put it on your Netflix queue, but don't go spending $20 on it. Wait till Robert Earl Keen inevitably comes rollin' through your town.

STALE TEXAS!!!Dec 21, 2006
By BILLYBOBUK LONG TIME FAN OF REK, BUT THIS RELEASE IS DISAPOINTING--SOUND QUALITY IS POOR, PREVIOUS DVDS OF REK ARE SO MUCH BETTER.(CHECK OUT LIVE DINER 2, AND THE AUSTIN CITY LIMITS SHOW) EVERYBODY LOVES REK, AND I CAN ALWAYS HEAR AGAIN THE OLD FAVORITES, BUT WE HAVE HEARD THEM ALL DONE BETTER. REMEMBER THE 1ST TIME I SAW REK IN THE EARLY 80'S WHEN APART FROM THE GREAT SONGS, IT WAS HIS STORYTELLING AND PERSONALITY THAT IMPRESSED--THIS DVD DOES NOT DISPLAY ANY OF THAT--SEEMS LIKE HE HAS LOST IT OVER THE YEARS, JUST ANOTHER SHOW. LOVE TO SEE HIM TAKE A BREAK, AND RELEASE A DVD OF HIM PLAYING SOLO,TELLING STORIES,SMILE ON HIS FACE--BUT WHILE FANS STILL GO OUT AND SINGALONG TO MERRY XMAS FROM THE FAMILY ANYTIME OF THE YEAR, WHO CAN BLAME HIM NOT CHANGING. THE PRINTED SONG LIST IS OUT OF ORDER, DO THEY REALLY CARE!!!!!
"The Greatest Show REK Ever Been Gave"!!! This is 75 minutes of REK & His Band at Their Best - "Live at the Ryman"!!!!!!!!!!!Feb 13, 2012

"Southern Rocker"
I recently saw Robert Earl Keen (REK) & his band perform live at the "3 Doc's Brew House", on February 4, 2012, in Ruston, Louisiana (Home of Louisiana Tech), and it was one heck of a show. It was up close and personal, you could stand right there in front of the band, it was awesome. They were selling this dvd at the show, but I just bought a T-Shirt of "Robert Earl Keen - The Road Goes On Forever". I waited and purchased this dvd from amazon, because it was a lot cheaper.
I've seen REK's other dvds and in my opinion, this is his best one. On this concert dvd, he even adds a banjo player, to his original band, which has a steel guitar player, acoustic & electric guitar player, a bass guitar player, and a drummer. REK plays an acoustic guitar and sings all lead vocals. As REK states in the notes to this dvd, this was their 1st time to perform in the Ryman, and REK at first experienced "stage fright", so you can notice in the dvd, he was a little "up-tight" at the very beginning, but as the concert progressed, he loosened up, and really put on one heck of a concert. The Ryman Auditorium was packed with a capacity crowd, and as the concert progresses, they really get "into it".
Since the amazon product description does not give the song list, then I will. The songs are as follows:
1.Feelin'Good Again 2.Gringo Honeymoon 3.Rollin'By 4.What I Really Mean 5.Amarillo Highway 6.Merry Chrismas From the Family 7.Corpus Christi Bay 8.Furnace Fan 9.Broken End of Love 10.I'm Comin'Home 11.For Love 12.Long Chain 13.The Road Goes On Forever 14.Farm Fresh Onions 15.A Border Tragedy (Credits)
If you ever get the chance to see REK perform live "in person", you'll love it. He is definitely one of the best live performers ever. At the show I went to, he had the packed capacity crowd, really fired up and "into it", with most of the fans including me singing along. Now, this dvd is not a real live concert in person, but it sure is the closest thing to it in my opinion. I love this concert dvd. The Ryman Auditorium is packed to capacity, the crowd is really "into it", and REK and his band really perform exceptionally well. Like it states on the dvd cover "The Greatest Show Ever Been Gave", and I definitely agree. I just wish it were longer, but it's well worth the purchase price for the 75 minutes included in this dvd. Thanks and I hope this review has been helpful.

Buddy Holly Meets William FaulknerJan 04, 2007
By Gary Presley Think of Buddy Holly crossed with William Faulkner. You got yourself Robert Earl Keen, Jr., a singer I've been following since I caught a glimpse of him on AUSTIN CITY LIMITS back before either of us had gray in our hair. I wrote him a postcard after hearing him mention he lived in a very small town in Texas. He wrote back telling me how to get his recordings. I bought them in cassette tape. Now I have them in CDs and in DVDs (as available).
Listen to "Marino" and tell me Mr Keen ain't a poet.
Listen to "Gringo Honeymoon" and tell me that three or four minutes of song isn't as good a rendition of the Texican culture as Cormac McCarthy's trilogy.
Listen to "Levelland" or "Rolling By" and tell me the guy can't probe the melancholy depths of the spirit.
