Learn by watching, no written music includedDec 31, 2007

"Carol"
This DVD is useful to the student who learns best by watching the instructor, rather than using a book with dulcimer tablature with a companion CD. The close-up camera angles of David's playing demonstrations are very good. He takes the student through a song, one phrase a time. Before the era of self-taught books and instructional CD and DVDs, this is reminiscent of the days when the experienced musician would pass along their knowledge (one-on-one) to the novice musician. This also enforces the student to memorize the song while learning the song, rather than becoming dependent on the sheet music. I believe a student can learn many things by watching another musician. Therefore, if for no other reason, I recommend this DVD for the purpose of aspiring students observing (and absorbing from) a very fine mountain dulcimer player.

By Anne O'Connor This dvd is a 'must have' addition to the 'how to play' books. If you want to do more than just play the notes on the melody strings and strum the drones, this dvd will show you how. His dulcimer and finger positioning is much easier than the 'traditional' style, and the cords make the dulcimer sound so much fuller. David only plays 3 songs on this dvd, but what he shows you will enhance ANY song you play. He has a few really great 'tricks' and explanations for transitions, too. For those of us who are primarily visual learners, this dvd is fantastic.

Not what I expectedDec 08, 2007
By Mike This video is strictly 'picking' and not 'strumming'.. It teaches you to play it like a guitar....

By Mrs Betty Turner This won't be a complete how-to for the novice dulcimer player. If that's what you need then there are some others out there. This is a REALLY great starter though from someone who was among the greatest dulcimer teachers we've had. For those who don't know, Prof. Schnaufer was a professor and scholar of dulcimer at Blair (Vanderbilt University) and recorded with The Judds, Johnny Cash, Chet Atkins and other greats. Among his students was Cyndi Lauper. His influence on most of the greatest players is very real and you can hear (and see) easily the influence that other earlier great players passed to him.
You get this video to watch the master play as he passes on what earlier masters showed him. To see how he handles his instrument and where he puts his hands. To experience his enthusiasm for the instrument and to be inspired. You get it to see the little nuances that define a great player. You get it to learn what was between Jean toward Stephen and Bing (among others).
But, if you need a complete step-by-step introduction to all things musical before you can even find your D string - this probably isn't what you want you. Get it while you can though, you'll want it later if you become serious about your dulcimer.
