Nina Simone livesJun 12, 2009
By Philip G. Pryor This is a powerful video of old performances, done in her active time in the USA civil rights movement. It's still strong, relevant and artistic, though moving and even risking offence to some. It's instructive also, showing a mature, committed, intense artist in control of material, techniques and the attentive audience itself. Worthwhile.

Brilliant - a revelation.Apr 17, 2009
By G A Lankester I have adored this Diva since age 12 in 1965 and "I put a spell on you". Strangely until I viewed this DVD I had not even been touched so forcibly by the human rights issues - yes I knew they were there but not one after another and another - NO! Blame me for living in UK! However, this DVD reinforces the strength of this great icon of the 20th century. I love and respect her even more now. The commitment and passion is so much more evident. Dr Simone - you are a saint - your approach laid the way for Barak.

First Class JobJan 06, 2009
By Robert Barker Reelin' In the Year productions are always first class. I have many of the Jazz Icon DVDs, Blues Festival DVDs, and their excellent Marvin Gaye, Temptations, and Stax Revue DVDs. (There's even more but you can look them up on their website). People are now trying to imitate them, but it's not quite the same, especially in the Jazz Icons area. These are the standard. You like Nina Simone? You'll love this DVD.

Powerful PerformanceApr 01, 2012
By D.R.L. ~ Captivating. Spellbinding. Powerful. This 64-minute DVD captures Nina Simone in the midst of her social conscious period that spanned 1963 to 1970. ~ Two concert: the first recorded in Holland on 25 December 1965; the second recorded in England on 14 September 1968. In both concerts she is supported by an excellent sympathetic jazz combo. ~ The songs are all poignant with powerful messages of political and social importance. Nina's delivery varies from intensely serious to humorous, but the message is never lost. She varies her voice from song to song and even verse to verse with a song as appropriate for the lyrics. Sometimes she becomes so deeply involved in the song that it looks like she has forgotten that there is an audience. ~ Song titles: Brown Baby, Four Women, The Ballade of Hollis Brown, Tomorrow Is My Time, Images, Go Limp, Mississippi Goddamn, Go To Hell, Ain't Got No / I Got Life, Backlash Blues, I Put A Spell on You, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, Why? (The King of Love is Dead). ~ Nina Simone fans will recognize many of these titles from her recordings of the time for Philips and RCA. Interestingly, when Nina Simone sings a song she puts her own stamp on it. Compare her version of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" to the version by the Animals in the same era. Hard to tell they are the same song. Likewise, "I Put a Spell on You" is a far cry from the version by Screamin' Jay Hawkins. ~ Highly recommended.
