Belongs in everyones collection.Nov 12, 2008

"Student Maven"
I can only say that I wish he was still with us. An incredible musician who great soloists would join to back up like Linda Ronstat. His voice makes me think that, as eclectic as my music tastes are, if I had to only listen to one artist, I would pick Hoyt. He was multidemensional a great writer, great singer, great guitar player, very good actor and,a very nice man. Give a listen, you will thank me.

An brief glimpse of Axton in actionFeb 07, 2011
By Mountain Mama The mini concerts at Church Street Station are a good way to glimpse performers that were around before the days of music videos. The quality is acceptable (not great), the play time is only about 22 minutes, but the price is right which makes these DVD's worth having in your collection. This is a good way to see Hoyt Axton now that he's no longer with us. Axton was a talented guy - actor, singer, and songwriter. Here he performs 4 songs including the song he wrote for "Three Dog Night"... "Joy to the World." Also included is one of his catchiest songs "Boney Fingers." The DVD also includes a brief history of country music which is a bit dry, but we watched it and found it informative with some interesting historic footage.

It is what it is...Mar 17, 2012
By dvb A painfully short peek into the career of a woefully under-appreciated country legend. My old man was a huge fan, so his music holds a special place in my heart.
This video feels like live concert that was filmed for a TV show (probably exactly what it is). Filmed at Orlando's Church Street Station, a voice-over narrator brings us in and introduces some songs. You can tell where the commercials would be. I couldn't find any information on an exact date, but judging from the songs (Wild Bull Rider came out in 1979), I'd guess this performance is from the early 80's (in the twilight of his career).
There are four songs on this DVD, they are as follows:
"Boney Fingers" is kind of a corny song, but a fun warm-up nonetheless.
"Evangelina" felt a little rushed and lifeless to me. Which is a shame because it's my favorite song of his, and easily one of his best. You almost get the feeling that since he had played it so many times up to this point, he might have been a little sick of it and anxious to get on to the next song.
"Wild Bull Rider" brings things back on track, with Hoyt introducing the song and revealing that he "wrote it with his good friend Jack Daniels"
"Joy to the World" is really the true gem here, as you're probably more familiar with the Three Dog Night version of this song that Hoyt wrote. Performed with a great energy and smiles all around. Hoyt even starts jumping around on stage, threatening to bring the house down in entirely the wrong way as he was easily pushing 300 lbs at the time.
The DVD extra is a 9 min, black and white mini documentary called 'Origins of Country' that is marginally interesting and basically just filler.
Since this only cost me 8 bucks and it's currently your only option to see video of a Hoyt Axton performance (outside of Youtube), you can't really go wrong here. Like I said in the title, it is what it is.
