With over thirty years as a Rock 'N' Roll icon, Toronto's first son of fret board wizardry has simply refused to lie down. Despite a plethora of live albums there has been very little concert footage of Travers available. Shot on11th April 1976 in K”ln, Germany this is a classic document of the early stages of Travers rise to international fame. Playing as a three piece, he and his band set the standard for generations of guitar hero wannabes. A dazzling yet strangely understated performance, this was a tantalizing taster for what was to follow. Hooked on Music is an impressive insight into a man who has become a bona fide Rock guitar virtuoso. Amongst the tracks featured is the hit single "Boom Boom". Thankful for what it is but could be betterAug 06, 2007

"ZappaFan"
I've been a fan of Pat's since the mid 1970s and video footage of him from that era is at the top of my "why, oh why hasn't this been released yet" list. So I was quite excited when I saw this mentioned in a fellow reviewer's best guitar DVDs list and ordered it immediately!
Well, while I won't say it was disappointing, the songs on the DVD that later fans are familiar with (especially the ones that are also on the magnificent "Go For What You Know" live album) are a little disappointing. Great video and good sound but not quite what we're used to performance wise. Nicko McBrain is a good drummer but this 3-piece band simply can't compare to PT's later line-up with Pat Thrall on guitar and Tommy Aldridge on drums, which is far superior. Of course Bassist Peter "Mars" Cowling and Travers himself also grew and matured in the years between this concert and the "Go for..." tour.
In fact, the whole concert reminds me A LOT of another mid-70's DVD...the Don Kirshner's Rock Concert bonus footage from UFO's "Strangers in the Night" DVD. Both concerts contain a lot of "puffed out" bare-chested strutting and posing for the girls in the audience that almost overshadows the incredible musical talent also on display. Both shows, while good stuff, are not comparable to what each would become within 2-3 years. But you can definitely see the seeds of what each would eventually evolve into and that fact alone makes each DVD worth the price of admission. And, of course, PT's guitar playing is already on fire, but then again, it always was!!
As several reviewers have already mentioned this was filmed for the German show Rock Palast and it was filmed in a really small venue, I would be surprised if there's more than a 100-150 people in attendance and it's obvious most of them don't have a clue who Pat Travers is!! This greatly impacts the overall atmosphere of the show but at least, by the end, they are responding to his playing.
So, bottom line, if you are a PT fan, then you need to get this, my only gripe is that this line-up is not as good as what his band would become with Pat Thrall and Tommy Aldridge. I give it 4 stars simply for what it is......RARE video of the great PT at the beginning, a lesser subject would only get 3 stars! Now if they'd just find and release footage from the "Heat in the Street", "Go for What You Know" or "Crash and Burn" tours, I would be a happy man indeed!!

Vintage Pat Travers Band - LIVE IN 1976Jun 07, 2007

This DVD and is well worth the investment. The picture and sound quality is very good considering the video is over 30 years old. Yes, the fans are sitting on their hands but the upside is that you can hear every note and drum fill. This second incarnation of the PTB (Travers, Cowling and McBrain) is my favorite. If you are a PTB fan, you won't be disappointed.

Must HaveMar 28, 2007
By Martin J. Russell This is an excellent release, as there is very little on DVD of PT out there, this ends up being a little gem!!!. It is early PT which has to be good, filmed at the Rockpalast
so the camera work is great and the sound is stero, but WHO cares, the guitar playing is nothing short of amazing, and PT is on his own, nowhere to hide with another guitar player. As I have never seen him live as he has never toured Australia, this is the most I had hoped for!. Just GET IT !!!!!

Sense of HumourMar 01, 2007
By Mr. Chambon Joel I am a Pat's fan since his beginnings and I'm very sastfied that finally there is something to look . I bought the Boom Boom dvd a very good gig (but not in 5.1 as stated) except that Pat don't play all guitar solos and that his voice have little bit changed.
This new one live on DVD is... How to tell you... A kind of "Amateur" and really close to a Rehearshel it's filmed (2.0 stereo) on the earley Rockpalast series, the audience is very passive and don't seems to be interested by the band but the show is on stage. Please pay interest in the words between Pat and Nico this is really fun.
The gig let us see Pat, Nicko McBrain and Peter "Mars" Cowling with clothes in a pure disco style. If you don't care about and that you are only in interest with the music, this is a really great moment with a young talented guitarist and great classics tunes.
I don't know if Pat have seen this one before or if he give its agreement but if yes "thank's for your sense of humour and for your great playing on this show".
(Sorry for my english)

Vintage Travers.....Extremely Cool.....Jul 06, 2007
By SuperChief This was the year and this was the Travers that I discovered so many years ago. I love this DVD because it is Travers at such a great time in his career. The sound is good...(stereo)... and the picture quality is excellent as well. With Mars Cowling tearing up the bass guitar and Nicko McBrain on drums, you simply cannot go wrong. As has already been said, this is a MUST for any serious Travers fan. Quality musicianship from long ago and far away.....highly recommended.
