Experience pure "hyphy", the state of mind celebrated in the music, fashion, slang and dance of this culture that popularized ghostriding the whip - walking, running or dancing next to a moving car. With music by top Bay Area Hip Hop artists Mac Dre, E-40, Keak the Sneak, the Federation and more, GHOSTRIDE THE WHIP is about more than the street parties and sideshows of hyphy: "It's not just a word or a song... it's how we live out there." | | | Product Details: | | | Actors:

Start off good, gets predictable.Aug 02, 2008
By Duke "Ghostride The Whip" starts out chronicalizing Bay area culture starting with the migration of blacks from the South, up to the formation of the Black Panther party. From there it gives you in inside look of sideshows, turf dancing, and ghostriding the whip. It's really nothing new if you've been keeping an eye on the Bay, but what takes this DVD into a predictable direction is when they start giving a biography of Mac Dre (T.I.P.).
Don't get me wrong, Mac Dre was a great artist with his slick rhymes and clever concepts and it's a shame that he was taken so early. But with all due respect, the man passed away 4 years ago and today the Bay area is so much more than Mac Dre. There are tons of artists out there who are factors in the Bay area, and this movie doesn't even mention them. Instead we have MC Hammer telling us how he doesn't ghostride the whip. You got Akon and Chamillionaire predicting the future of the Bay area. What about the Bay area artists who are the future of this hyphy movement!?
Where was The Jacka, Yukmouth, Ya Boy, San Quinn, Dem Hoodstarz, AP.9, Sky Balla, Guce, Lee Majors, Dubee, Duna, Husalah, Fed-X, Turf Talk, J. Stalin, Rydah J Klyde, The Pack, Cataracs, Andre Nickatina, Mac Mall, DJ Fresh, Beeda Weeda, etc etc? These are the artists the people need to hear about. I mean, seriously. MC Hammer, Akon, and Chamillionaire?
In the end, this movie is just a cheap attempt to cash in on the death of Mac Dre. It pays too much attention to the past, with no glimpse of the future. This DVD pays no respect to the artists out there today who are hustlin for the Bay area. I wouldn't recommend this for a purchase, but there are some sideshow accidents worth downloading for.
Amazing filmFeb 11, 2009
By Mrs Jackson WOW... I've been into this whole hyphy thing for awhile now but i never knew the whole history... this film is great! dating back to when the black panthers ran the bay area... so much to learn when watching this it made me love what i do even more :) and to the guy who said they dont do a background on any of the current rappers... homeboy ur trippin! Mista Fab, Jay Diggs, Keak da Sneak these are all bay area legends and to remeber Mac Dre (T.I.P) in this movie is just .... WOW ive learned so much more and respect these artists and what they stand for so much more
The Bay UNCOVEREDAug 31, 2008
By Marco Cervantes Ghostride the Whip was a very well made DVD. The choice of SWAY from MTV being the Narrarator was great as he has a nice voice to listen to. Lots of subjects are covered. Dances,History,Artists, and other things that some people are not aware about. The Documentary was great from start to finish and should be a must buy if you are a fan of Hyphy music. If you are a music person and have no clue what Hyphy music is, Ghostride the Whip will introduce you the main aspect.

Duke's got it twistedAug 05, 2008

This is an amazing doc that chronicles the bay area Hyphy scene. Much better the the cover would suggest, I highly recommend it for those who love Hip Hop and outrageous bay behavior. It features the most important Hyphy artists and tell a great story. It's a lot deeper then you would expect. If you know the bay then you know that Mac Dre had a huge influence. He was the jumping point for the whole culture. This film tells his story in a way that organically works with the Hyphy movement. The film does deal with the current state of Hyphy, they have Traxamillion, Keak Da Sneak, Mistah F.A.B. so I don't know what Duke's talking about. My suggestion to Duke is, go back to watching John Wayne movies.
