Larry Graham DVD reviewFeb 18, 2007
By Ed If you think that this is an instructional DVD--it is not. There are no frame-in-frame closeups showing Larry's playing techniques. This is a video of Larry playing a few tunes in a studio with a couple of his old bandmates. If you're into that, the DVD is interesting.
If you expect some guidance concerning funk bass playing, you will be very disatisfied. For funk bass instruction try the Francis Rocco Prestis (Fingerstyle Funk - VHS only) and Alex Sklarevski (Slap Bass) videos..both are great.

Absolutely Wonderful
It isn't often that you get to spend quality time with someone that is a master at what they do. This DVD allows you to spend quality time with the a master bassist, Larry Graham. This isn't a typical "how to play the bass" DVD. Larry and friends actually take the time to share techniques and the heart and soul that is the foundation for the techniques. I have been fortunate in that I have been able to spend quality time with Larry and this DVD just reminds me of how passionate Larry is about his music and his life. This DVD share some intimate insight into some of Larry's most memorable performances and the style of bass playing that he invented while performing with his mom Dell Graham. The DVD is absolutely wonderful.

Funk Buzz Bass AttackMay 02, 2009
By Charles Betz This is not a beginner's instructional tutorial. There is no stop/explanation that is the norm of other instructional DVDs. It is assumed that the viewer has had more than a few years playing experience and thus little explanation is required and close monitoring of the applied technique is the instructional method. Though the cover states "Beginning To Intermediate", this DVD is geared from advanced intermediate to professional level. What is presented are songs that require advanced technique and skills. An advanced musician will readily understand all the principals presented here as involved and applied to the funk/fusion genre. This is produced in a studio setting with two exceptionally accomplished musicians (on drums and organ) from Graham's other musical endeavors. The asides are a bit distracting but if you want to know how funk is played then this a great instructional DVD.

If you are looking to see Larry Graham in concert or just on stage DO NOT purchase this DVD. On the other hand if you want to see/hear Larry Graham and one of the band's former members reminiscing in a home studio, then this DVD to get.
