Flatlanders - Absolute Best VideoNov 06, 2004
By Nancy R. Conrad For anyone who is a Flatlanders fan but has never seen them in concert this DVD is a must. I have been to several of their concerts and watching this is as close to being there as you can get without being there. They are in top form and do an absolutely wonderful concert. Many of the songs are from their CD, Now Again and are all very well done as is the CD. Butch Hancock plays the harmonica on several songs and his talent is very impressive. He doesn't seem to play it as much at live concerts so anyone seeing this DVD is actually getting a bonus!! They do a rendition of "Gimme a Ride to Heaven," and it is really rockin' tune which it is apparent they all like doing the song. I have seen bootleg videos of the Flatlanders and, of course, they seem very amateur compared to this DVD and now that I have this I will probably not watch them again. The Flatlanders band is always very good, but they are exceptional on this DVD. Robbie Gjersoe, the lead guitarist is wonderful. Watching him is like watching a show in itself. He gives his all and the Flatlanders are lucky to have him. Joe Ely and Jimmie Dale Gilmore do the same superb job they do on all their albums. I got the DVD in today's mail and have already watched it three times and will watch it many more times in the future. The only thing missing (as far as I am concerned) was "West Texas Waltz", that I have seen them do at every concert and Jimmie always dances while he does it. But, in all fairness, there are 17 songs on the DVD, so I guess they couldn't do everything!! "Dallas" is fantastic, as usual. If you are a Flatlanders fan you can't go wrong with this--it's worth much more than the price I paid for it!! There is a documentary called "Lubbock Lights," which I saw in Lubbock, Texas after a Flatlanders concert that is basically a history of the Flatlanders and is terrific, but to the best of my knowledge it has not been released for sale, but you should keep your eye out for it. I hope all of you reading this like this video as much as I did.

Anything but "Flat"Aug 14, 2005
By M. Lawhorn Excellent concert as usual from Austin City Limits. Individually, these guys are great musicians and songwriters but collectively as "The Flatlanders" they really shine.
The lead guitarists timely kick @$$ licks are the icing on the cake!

Not having seen any live performances of the group, this DVD gave me that opportunity. I wish there were other performances that were available to buy. I love the sound and especially Gilmore's voice. Can't get enough!

The Flatlanders - infectious good timesFeb 17, 2012
By D.R.L. ~ As I write this review there are already seven 5-star reviews of this DVD on Amazon. I am going to make that eight. This 75 minute concert recorded 21 June 2002 and released in 2009 was the source for a half hour segment of Austin City Limits. The concert presents the three singer / song writers at the top of their game, and it is obvious that Joe, Jimmy, and Butch enjoy performing together and have a strong mutual respect for each other. These three guys are just having fun on stage, and we get to watch them have fun. It is a joy to see them tossing the lead back and forth during many of the songs. ~ As other reviews have mentioned, the majority of the tunes are from their "Now Again" CD plus a few songs from their individual solo careers. While most of the songs are co-written by some combination of Joe / Jimmy / Butch, but they so set aside two songs to pay tribute to two other great Texas song writers: Terry Allen and Townes van Zandt. ~ The backing band is excellent, with versatile guitarist Gary Gjersoe getting plenty of solo space. ~ As one would expect from an ACL production, the sound and camera work are excellent. ~ Highly recommended for anyone interested in progressive country music and infectious good times. Even if you have never been to Texas, close your eyes and this video will transfer you to a Texas roadhouse or dance hall.
