 Start Blues then substitute 1 chord at a time till jazz!Jan 06, 2009

This is a must have video for players and composers who have little comprehension of the specific connections between blues and jazz. It contains enough to decipher a jazz tune or build one up from blues, and even to create songs in styles along the blues to jazz continuum.
Besides chords and their roll in progression style, Don shows scale and arpeggio choices for improvisation over those chords, along with examples of specific licks (some fairly lengthy - oh yeah..). This DVD comes with a PDF file containing note-for-note transcription sheet music with tab and guitar neck diagrams that shows all the examples played on the video, and a few extra extended scale & arpeggio solos.
Don Mock is a great guitarist and teacher (especially in Jazz-Rock Fusion, Jazz, and Theory). His DVDs, whether his own tutorials or his productions of other players (e.g. Joe Pass), are always worth owning because they are so informative and well balanced between playing specifics and music theory that they are reference tools good for a life time, and should hold their resale value (though I plan to keep mine).
Also see Don's booklet Guitar Axis Master Class 'Turnarounds' with CD, it reveals a great yet manageable way of dealing with turnarounds; and it is another example of Don's ability to really give you tools and knowledge to quickly get the job done; and it is a perfect companion to 'The Blues from Rock to Jazz'.

This is my second Don Mock instructional dvd. I was so impressed with the other one that I had to have this one, too. I own around 30 instructional dvd's - all in blues & jazz genres. I put Don Mock's at the top of the list, expecially in jazz. Not only because of the quality of his instruction and the production itself, but also for the quantity of USEFUL information and techniques he presents. He covers a LOT of territory. He wastes no time introducing himself, promoting himself, showing how to tune a guitar, telling you what he's going to show you, or why you need to know it. It's all meat and it's all good. Come on, that's why they have "pause" and "rewind" buttons on the player. He only repeats himself in order to clarify and caution on the more complex parts. And he gives lots of options and substitutions.
Not for the beginner. Perfect for the player with some guitar foundation who is ready to get on to the good stuff. I would never think of giving up any of my Don Mock materials, and I hope he continues to make more. I can see already that they are great references for any guitarist.
Not only is Don an accomplished musician, it is mostly his gift for teaching that separates him from the herd. The remainder of the distance from the herd he enjoys is the result of the quality of the production itself. All other instructional dvd producers should take note.
Don helps you understand all that complex stuff between personal style and good playing technique. He truly makes your dreams of being a really good player seem possible. Anyone who can watch this video and NOT be inspired to move up a level really isn't serious about moving. He shows you how.

I defy any blues payer not to learn from this DVD - has everything from straight Chicago through jazz, be-bop, fusion and intervallic versions of the blues. Where Don scores so well is in the clarity of the presentation. The Pentatonic material is short and to the point - demonstrates 4 pentatonic scales against a long sequence of C7 (40 bars) and keeps it interesting! There is much more on the DVD, including a great section on using substitute arpeggios. Complex material, made understandable due to the skill of the presenter - very well organized. Superb! I loved this!!

"Strong"
I've been playing blues for a while and are getting bored with playing everything using the blues scale. This DVD quickly opened up a lot of possibilities for me. Don is an experienced teacher and has all the materials in mind before he speaks, therefore he's always straight to the point and concise (compared to his friend Robben Ford). I really enjoy his teaching and his modern sound.
The transcription that comes with it is also of great quality, so packed with good stuff.

This is a great, simple and well played complete guitar lesson for a jazz guitar student!
Don Mock has a great touch and tempo in playing modern guitar he can sing what he's playing and what most he can teach with the right feeling and make things very simple to understand and learn.
Quite a good choice !!
