5The Dirty Dozen, Larger than Life. Great N'Orleans Jazz/FunkOct 30, 2001
By jcfitz7
This is probably one of the greatest concert DVD's I've ever seen or purchased. This one ranks up there with The Dave Matthews Band, The Last Waltz, The Eagles "Hell Freezes Over", you name it. Technically speaking this DVD is impecable. The image quality is extrordinary; bright, vivid, colors. If you've ever seen The Dirty Dozen then you know they are not a flashy, high production, stage show band. The lighting in this DVD is very dynamic and really complements the jazzy, groovey feeling of The Dozen. The camera angles are fantastic. Whoever shot or editted this DVD clearly knows the music. The camera is always right were you'd want it to be, right on the soloist, right on the tastiest licks as they happen. When it's not trained on the band, it's got a bead on some nectar dancing in the audience.
As for the sound quality; 5 STARS. The show was obviously recorded for the surround sound process. It is crisp and clean and really phat (fat). The sound could be released as a CD on it's own Great song selection from the classic "Run Joe" to the New Orleans traditional "Cissy Strut" as well as all your favorite DDBB originals. The audience and the band are truely on fire.
Things really start cooking when a special guest takes the stage. Dave Schools, the bass player from the band "Widespread Panic" plays on a couple of tunes. WOW! Watching/hearing the duel between Schools and the Tuba player Jazz (Julius) is phenomenal. The musicianship combined with the editting really makes you feel like your on stage.
If you know the Dirty Dozen then you have to own this DVD. If you have never heard or seen them, do yourself a favor and buy this disc. This is really the way the DDBB is meant to be.

5good times with the dozenFeb 28, 2002

The infectious sounds of New Orelean's own Dirty Dozen Brass Band have a reputation for pleasing the crowd. And now, finaly, the bands' efforts have been captured on film--digital film no less!!! Here, on dvd, the band's exuberence and dedication clearly shine during their performance at The Georgia Theatre in Athens, GA. Highlights include a guest appearance of bassist Dave Schools of Wide Spread Panic, and the stirring solos from the sax and flute of legendary horn master Roger Lewis. This music dvd showcases these musicians expressing their love of music in their own 'down and dirty' New Orleans style.

5A Great Concert of New Orleans Jazz, Performed at the Georgia Theatre, in Athens, Georgia = A1+++!!!!!!!Jun 08, 2010
By Gary Covington "Southern Rocker"
This is some great "Dixieland", New Orleans, Jazz, "Jam" Music. Most of it is instrumental, however, towards the end, they start singing some vocals. These guys really "get down" on their instruments. The Music is Great, Cheerful, Jazz. The Crowd really loves them. The total approx. running time is 104 minutes. This concert was filmed at the Georgia Theatre, in Athens, Georgia. It does not give the date on the concert, but it has a copyright of 2001.

If you liked the Deluxe Edition Double CD of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (From New Orleans), Benefit double disc CD, then you'll probably enjoy this one, and vise/versa.

I got to see this band perform live at the 2005 New Orleans Jazz Festival, and they were really good.

This band has been performing together for at least 23 years.

The songs:
1.Blackbird
2.Remember When
3.Gemini Rising
4.Voodoo
5.Night Train
6.Run Joe
7.Charlie Dozen
8.It Ain't What Ya Think
9.Pet the Kat
10.It's All Over Now (Dave Schools from the Southern Rock Band "Widespreed Panic", form Athens, Georgia, joins in on this one & the next few, playing his electric bass guitar.
11.Cissy Strut
12.Superstition (The Stevie Wonder song)
13.Use Your Brain

This concert dvd has been praised by "The London Times", & the "San Francisco Bay Guardian".

Thanks, and may God Bless New Orleans, and our Gulf Coast!!!
