| | | | FOLK MUSIC | Home » » DVD-Essential DADGAD For Beginners #1 | | | | | | | Description: | | Here is an easy introduction to DADGAD for those who are new to alternate tunings and want to explore its unique sounds on the guitar. It brings beautiful progressions, unique chords, ringing open strings and rich tones to your playing. In his "guided tour," guitarist Artie Traum shows you how to retune your guitar quickly and easily, form the important chords in the key of D (some using only one finger), improvise instrumentals, write songs, and get funky with country blues ideas. Using the folk classic "The Water Is Wide" as an example, Artie reveals how a song can be harmonized using basic chord positions in this tuning. DADGAD will transform the way you play your guitar. It will help you improvise beautiful fingerstyle pieces with its unique tonality, and inspire you to go on to more advanced studies in alternate tunings. What's DADGAD? A simple tool that many players utilize to bring new texture and color to the guitar's sound. It's widely used by songwriters, blues guitarists and contemporary fingerstyle players. Three of the strings are retuned to get into DADGAD: The two E strings (6th and 1st) are dropped a whole tone to D, and the B (2nd string) is dropped to A. The remaining strings, A (5th), D (4th) and G (3rd) are not retuned. Thus: E becomes D; A remains A; D remains D; G remains G; B becomes A; E becomes D Because there is no 3rd note of the scale, the resulting sound is neither major nor minor, giving it a ringing, open sound that fits a variety of styles, tonalities and genres. | | | Product Details: | | | Actors:

Great Introduction to DADGADNov 21, 2007
By Frederick II of Hohenstaufen
"Amor et Hilaritas"
I've got quite a few instructional dvd's and when I wanted to learn the basics of DADGAD tuning I went right to homespun tapes based on their good track record (every dvd I've bought on homespun has been well worth the money).
This dvd on DADGAD is VERY good. I've been playing guitar for a number of years and have never played in this tuning before (I'm a little familiar with D and G but never tried DADGAD). Within a half hour of watching this dvd by Artie Traum I was able to make music in this tuning.
When I buy an instructional dvd, I want to be challenged, yet I also want to be able to learn something simple at the get-go, to get my motivation up right away, and this dvd delivers. I can't afford to take lessons or attend workshops, so learning from dvd's is my only way to make any progress in playing guitar. I highly recommend this dvd to anybody wanting to learn DADGAD. Artie is a great teacher and will get you playing within the first twenty minutes.

A Great Start To DADGADMar 14, 2006
By R. Wiltbank I've been playing celtic music for about 6 or 7 years now and, up until this point, it's mostly been whistle, bodhran and octave mandolin. When I decided I finally wanted to learn how to mangle playing a guitar as well I figured, since I mostly do celtic, I'll skip standard tuning and just try to learn DADGAD.
Aside from being a gorgeous tuning in which to play, this video gave a great introduction to chords in the key of D along with great moving bass line chord progressions. The first 35 minutes or so focuses on this while the last 20 minutes moves on to blues chords. If you have any experience playing a string instrument, you should be able to pick up the concepts in this video within a solid day of playing. If this is your first experience with gutiar, it's an excellent choice for celtic, singer/songwriter and blues style playing. I currently have his #2 & 3 DVD's on order, though I'm hoping I'll find them usefull as it seems they, too, will focus more on blues.
All in all, after a week, I feel comfortable taking my guitar to session and doing a bit of flatpicking and light fingerstyle to the songs we do in D.
A Homespun ClassicNov 21, 2010
By Peter Hyatt This, along with Parts 2 and 3 (Amazon now sells volumes 1-3 as a set) is a now classic Homespun Instructional DVD, with excellent camera work, proper TAB (nicely legible!) and gifted instruction.
Artie Traum has recently passed away and left a huge hole in Americana, but his warmth and enthusiam live on in his instructional DVDs. His love of DADGAD is all over this DVD, as is his enthusiasm for some of the most simple and beautiful sounds found on a guitar.
This is a simple DVD, truly for beginners, but is a necessary part of the series which builds one upon another, with increasing complexity. A strong foundation is essential for the more complex songs in DADGAD found in volume 3, though Artie shows that this tuning is not complex, with much beauty coming from one finger chords.
A five star DVD release for content, camera angles, gifted instruction, and clear Tablature. It is what is expected from Homespun.
