Some clutter, but Chet is greatFeb 13, 2004

This 1980 TV special is a real treat for Chet Atkins fans. Being that it's a tribute taped in front of a live audience, Chet himself is on stage for perhaps a bit over a third of the running time, but at 99 minutes, that gives you well over a half hour of Chet(and the price is right). The highlights are his solo medley at the end and a sublime duet with Earl Klugh, but there are some charming things in between. There are also a few comedy routines, and a great many 1980 Nashville stars singing their hits. Some of these songs haven't aged well, and I fast-forwarded through a few. But let's face it, we're here for Chet, and what's here is prime. The sound is quite good, and the full screen image is clear and bright.

I was reading on of the other reviews on here, the one by "The Delite Rancher". You cannot pay ANY attention to his review. He has absolutely no idea what Chet Atkins STILL DID and MEANT to Nasvhille right up until the day he died. He states that "the tribute was made 25 years after his prime", which is ludicrous in and of itself because that would put his "prime" at year of 1955, just one year after he even arrived in Nashville.
Just because Chet didn't have top 10 hits and wasn't as much in the performing and recording scene by 1980, doesn't mean that he wasn't a VERY important figure in Nashville. Chet Atkins was adored in Nashville, and even into the 90's you could still hear people say that Chet was the "king" of Nashville.
I wish there was some way to remove that review because it's both inaccurate and uneducated. That would be like saying "why come out with an Elvis DVD now?! He's been dead for over 30 years?!"
The review is simply wrong and misses the point of the DVD. In 1980, Chet, behind the scenes, was a very important and influential figure in Nashville.
The DVD is great. It has wonderful comedy (although dated), it has great orchestrated performances and special guests. From Tom T. Hall, Charlie Pride, Bobby Bare, Porter Waggoner and Archie Campbell to Earl Klugh (Chet's absolute favorite guitar player) and The Statler Brothers, this is a DVD special NOT to be missed. The color, sound and quality are impeccable for a recording from 1980, and it's a real hoot to watch.

Dated, but still quite goodApr 03, 2006

I watched this over the weekend and altho dated, it is rather good entertainment for anyone who enjoys country music and especially Chet Atkins. I also see The Delite Rancher is reviewing this on Amazon. He also reviewed this DVD on Netflix with the same negative nonsense about President Bush, etc. I suspect this person is NOT a country music fan or has much knowledge of it in any case. I strongly recommend this DVD.

Was a little disappointed in this DVD because it didn't have much on it with Chet Atkins. It was good, but mostly other folks and just a little of Chet.

A Tribute - Not a Performance by ChetSep 02, 2009

There's no bigger Chet Atkins fan than yours truly, and I am more than happy to see him paid tribute all the live long day. Just be aware, though, that this DVD has very little biographical data, and very little of Chet performing. When he does perform, it's with a muzzle, not with fangs bared. So to speak, of course. It was enjoyable to see a cast of characters I haven't seen in a long time, i.e. those paying tribute, so it is a nice trip down memory lane in that respect. No technical discussions about his playing or his guitars, though. What it is, or was, was a single TV special with a bunch of Chet's friends coming on stage to chat and perform. If you are a Chet fan I recommend you get it, but only with the right expectations - it's a terrible feeling to be disappointed in anything associated with mein lieber Chet.
