You want to talk about rights? This is America! Ask the Indians!Nov 15, 2010
By E. Hernandez BLACK AND BLUE: LEGENDS OF THE HIP-HOP COP (2005) was an excellent documentary that didn't surprise me at all. Nor should it be surprising. I hadn't heard of this before tonight--I just watched it on Showtime. And very glad I did.
Derrick Parker, a former NYPD detective Grade 1 (read: Top Detective Dog) has always been a rap fan. At the start of the rap artist craze that seems to be dying out today, Parker formed a somewhat low-key hip-hop investigation unit in the NYPD.
Naturally, in no time flat, the hip-hop community knew of Parker and the unit's existence. Yet the intelligence gathered on these performers (and the way in which it was gathered) drew fire from everyone, including Rev. Al Sharpton and the ACLU. Mayor Giuliani, the NYPD and Parker himself fell under suspicion. The cloud thickened and things got uglier when it became known that the FBI had long been involved in the intel-gathering. Then Parker quit under this cloud of suspicion...and immediately got a job as rapper security.
Anyhow, this is what this documentary asserts. From questions about when this rapper violence will end, to queries about civil rights violations, each subject is addressed, not through scholastic means but directly by rappers like Ice-T (I'm a fan) and 50 Cent. Questions about the murders of Biggie Smalls and Tupak Shakur are also raised, but not in the way you might think.
The question in my mind was a simple one: how could anyone expect any better? This documentary is dated 2005. Who was in the White House then? Who trampled the Constitution thoroughly? Who spied on everyone? Is it any surprise that this kind of profiling and surveillance were occurring so much?
All I can add is that I enjoyed this disturbing documentary, feel everyone should see it and learn--and more like this should be made. It was really ahead of its time.

a look behind the scenes of the hip hop police. shows how rappers are unfairly targeted but also shows valid reasons as to why they are targeted. a bit boring most of the time. not alot of celebrities featured.
